Scriptures: Luke 15:1-10
The Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin
Luke 15:1-7
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming close to him to hear him. 2 The Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”
3 He told them this parable.
4 “Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it? 5 When he has found it, he carries it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7 “I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.”
The Parable of the Lost Coin
Luke 15:8-10
“Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost.’
10 “Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”
A special blessing to all the mums out there on Mothers’ Day.
Today’s lesson is the parables of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin in Luke 15:1-10.
It got me thinking about our little lambs (no matter what age) that are lost. What caused them to be lost?
I remember how we read in John 10 about Jesus being the Good Shepherd and the enemy of the sheep (the thief) who comes to steal, kill and destroy. So many wolves in sheep’s clothing ready to prey on the flock.
But also there are the Hired Hands, which Jesus says do not care about the sheep as the shepherd does. They care about their own safety and pay packet so they flee when the wolf comes.
Oh what a sad situation we see in the church, where ones who should be protecting the lambs are too afraid to attack the wolves.
Why have many young ones left the church because of church abuse? Your son or daughter may be one of them? This is a situation the makes me very sad.
Let’s pray that our Shepherd may go out and find them and bring them home. Let’s pray that He will help us bring the lost lambs home.
And dear Lord, comfort any mother who has a lost lamb.
