Facing Trial by Nettie https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/8-2-jesus-is-tried/#comment-75 Wed, 17 Sep 2025 22:55:22 +0000 https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/?post_type=jetpack-portfolio&p=703#comment-75 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. (John 11:49-53 WEB)

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. (Luke 3:1-2 WEB)

As they spoke to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came to them,  (2)  being upset because they taught the people and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.  (3)  They laid hands on them, and put them in custody until the next day, for it was now evening.  (4)  But many of those who heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.  (5)  In the morning, their rulers, elders, and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem.  (6)  Annas the high priest was there, with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and as many as were relatives of the high priest.
(7)  When they had stood Peter and John in the middle of them, they inquired, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”
(8)  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “You rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,  (9)  if we are examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,  (10)  be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand here before you whole.  (11)  He is ‘the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.’  (12)  There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”
(13)  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled. They recognized that they had been with Jesus.  (14)  Seeing the man who was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
(15)  But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,  (16)  saying, “What shall we do to these men? Because indeed a notable miracle has been done through them, as can be plainly seen by all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we can’t deny it.  (17)  But so that this spreads no further among the people, let’s threaten them, that from now on they don’t speak to anyone in this name.”
(18)  They called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
(19)  But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, judge for yourselves,  (20)  for we can’t help telling the things which we saw and heard.”
(21)  When they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for everyone glorified God for that which was done.  (22)  For the man on whom this miracle of healing was performed was more than forty years old. (Acts 4:1-22 WEB)

Comment on 5. Jesus Before Pilate and Herod by Nettie https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/5-jesus-before-pilate-and-herod/#comment-73 Mon, 08 Sep 2025 21:31:05 +0000 https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/?post_type=jetpack-portfolio&p=3292#comment-73 “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
This is Jesus’ reply to Pilate, who was rather confused about what the truth was. The religious leaders had brought this man to him, because he had “blasphemed God”, and that he deserved to die. Now he sees no reason to kill him.

Just before this (v36), Jesus said to Pilate: Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”

We must remember, in God’s Kingdom, we don’t fight as the world does. Instead as Paul tells us in Ephesians that our battle is a spiritual one. It is Satan and his forces who is our enemy, and not people.
“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. (Ephesians 6:12-13)

Jesus had no hate for the people who were about to crucify him, but rather love and forgiveness.
“The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9 WEB)

“First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. This is good and pleases God our Savior. God wants everyone to be saved and to fully understand the truth. There is only one God, and there is only one way that people can reach God. That way is through Christ Jesus, who as a man gave himself to pay for everyone to be free. This is the message that was given to us at just the right time.”
(1 Timothy 2:1-6 ERV)

The high priest is asking Jesus a question that appears to be seeking information, but is actually designed to trap Jesus into admitting something that would be detrimental to Him.
A Socratic fallacy occurs when someone asks a question that appears to be seeking information or clarification but is actually designed to trap or deceive the person answering. The goal is often to create a situation where the person answering is put on the defensive, forced to admit a weakness, or led to a contradictory or embarrassing conclusion.
In this case, the high priest’s question is designed to create a false dichotomy or to force Jesus to make an admission that they may not be willing to make.
But notice how Jesus always knew how to answer, and said that he had taught openly – it was public knowledge, and to ask those who heard what he taught.

The Consequences of Violence
“Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. (Genesis 9:6 ESV)

But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. (Psalms 55:23 ESV)

Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment, therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. (Ezekiel 35:5-6 ESV)

(Matthew 26:52)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:38-39 ESV)
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:18-21 ESV)
To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure. (1 Corinthians 4:11-12 ESV)
See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. (1 Thessalonians 5:15 ESV)
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. (1 Peter 2:21-23 ESV)
Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. (1 Peter 3:9 ESV)

Comment on 3. Prayer in the Garden by Nettie https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/3-prayer-in-the-garden/#comment-68 Sun, 31 Aug 2025 01:18:39 +0000 https://followjesus.jesusrocksau.com/?post_type=jetpack-portfolio&p=3210#comment-68 Not My Will, but Yours (Mark 14:36):
Nevertheless, despite his own feelings and agony, he submits his will to the Father. “Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (Matt 26:39)

Jesus said many times that this is why he was sent – To do the will of his Father.

Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” (Psalms 40:7-8 ESV)

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.” (John 4:34 ESV)

“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” (John 5:30 ESV)

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.” (John 6:38-39 ESV)

“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.” (John 12:27 ESV)

So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” (John 18:11 ESV)

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:8-11 ESV)

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:7-10 ESV)

Jesus prayed that if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him… “All things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me.” We see here the anguish of that hour. In his human self, he did not want to have to face this agony. He believed that His Father could change this situation.
Just like at the last minute when Abraham was offering his son, Isaac, on the altar, as God had asked him to do, as a test of his obedience, at the last minute, God provided another way. There was a lamb in the bushes, which Abraham sacrificed. So it would have been possible for the Father to have turned the situation around for Jesus.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27 ESV)

“Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:14 ESV)

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me? (Jeremiah 32:27 ESV)

He calls him Abba, Father, which means “daddy” or “papa”. And this relationship he told us we have with the Father. In the Lord’s prayer he taught us to begin our prayers with “Our Father…”
Check out about this amazing relationship we have with God our Father, just as Jesus did. Paul tells us about it in Romans 8 and Galatians 4.

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:15-17 ESV)

“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”(Galatians 4:6-7 ESV)
